Lather Me in Linseed Oil and Expose My Grain

Imagine what this unknown object would look like smothered in linseed oil. Slowly pouring it out of the can until it spreads across the top and starts to drip down. So beautiful. Sexy even. I now give you my apologies because your imagination is going to have to be your friend. There is no after photo of the beauty that must have been. I do not have one. I barely remember what happened after this coming of age oiling event. I also do not know the whereabouts of this now oiled-up wooden structure. I must have blacked out in the process and awoke to confusion. The confusion must have led me to take at least a two-hour nap at which time I just forgot about everything. Probably just a dream.

Here is some information for you. Linseed oil is a product of flaxseeds. That is right, the same flaxseeds that some of us use in our foods which are high in omega-3 and riddled with many other nutrients and proteins. The same flaxseeds that makeup flaxseed oil. Now you know. Go pass that nugget of knowledge along to someone.

So linseed oil and flaxseed oil are the same things? Not so fast. The product that we use to refresh our wood is not the same as the oil we can use in our foods. Please do not use linseed oil on your foods. The version reserved for wood products has a lot of chemicals added to it. This should be obvious to most woodworkers because of the cap on the can. Careful there. Nice and slow. Also, the smell does not make me want to dip any toast in it.

I do imagine though, that the wood is benefiting from all those omega-3s and nutrients. It is always so happy after a couple of coats. Just sucking in those proteins. Good job wood, good job.

Peace and Love.
